Most advice about AI for small business is either too vague to act on or aimed at companies with a technical team. You do not need either. You need one repetitive task that costs you time, and a sensible way to hand it over. Here are five good places to start.
One: answering the same customer questions. Opening hours, prices, delivery, bookings, returns. An assistant that answers these on your website, email or WhatsApp, and passes anything unusual to you, can take a large share of your inbox.
Two: chasing follow ups. Quotes that were never answered, invoices that are overdue, enquiries that went quiet. Automation can send polite reminders on schedule so nothing slips and you stop carrying the list in your head.
Three: writing the first draft. Quotes, proposals, product descriptions, social posts, replies to reviews. AI writes the first version from a short brief and you edit it. You stay in charge of what goes out, and you save the blank page.
Four: reports and numbers. If you pull figures from a few places into a weekly summary, that can be built to run itself and land in your inbox. Five: booking and reminders. Appointments taken on WhatsApp or your site, with reminders that cut no shows.
To pick your first one, choose the task that you or your team complain about most, that repeats weekly, and that follows steps you can describe. Do that one well, measure the hours it gives back, and only then add another. Starting small beats trying to change everything at once.
